2020 Electoral Map

My dream for the Electoral Map, 2020

My dream for the Electoral Map, 2020

If you’re like me, 2020 has been a tough year. I’ll spare you the laundry list of why. Suffice it to say, we are a nation on edge.

When George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis Police in late May, protests bubbled up all over the country. People watched him die and it hit us hard. It finally succeeded in waking up a lot of us white people who were complacent. Well-meaning, but inactive, and complacency is a silent endorsement of the racism and evils meted out to BIPOC.

My complacency turned into a raging guilt and my anxiety kept me from joining in any protests. I still did nothing except for engaging in less-than-mature arguments on Facebook. Finally, last weekend, when some neighbors were prepping their yard for a garage sale, they gave me this big wooden silhouette of the Lower 48. I’ve always liked maps and figured my daughter and I could do something fun with it on day as she progresses through school. Then, as I was walking back to my house, I hollered, “Girls! It’s the Electoral Map!” It was all blue, so in my dreamy dreams, I envisioned every state in the Union going Democrat. The wheels started turning and I knew I had to at least paint the word VOTE on the thing. Then all that blank wood around the borders cried out for real statements. I couldn’t let passersby misconstrue what I wanted them to vote for!

There’s a lot of things that are important to me that Biden and Harris represent and which T/P never will: Black Lives Matter. Trans rights are human rights. Believe in science. Elect more women. We are a nation of immigrants (on stolen land). Read real news. Love is love. I painted these words with great care, designing them to be beautiful and impactful. I want people to see the love I have for these ideals and to know that these are my footsteps in the march of protesters.

I shared a snapshot of my new painting, the first one I’d been called to do since the protests, and people asked for prints. And lawn signs. And t-shirts. And puzzles LOL. So, there’s plenty of merch to be had. Half of the proceeds from these sales will go for the causes I am fighting for. Please share the links to my shops and show your neighbors whose house is on the right side of history.
